Position Summary

Nelson Communications Cooperative, dba Ntec, is hiring a skilled and dependable Senior Fiber Construction & Network Technician to help build, maintain, and support the fiber optic network that keeps local homes, farms, businesses, and community organizations connected.

Based in Durand, WI, Ntec is a locally owned and operated communications cooperative providing fiber internet, phone, Stream TV, and related communications services to rural communities across its service territory, including Nelson, Durand, Arkansaw, Gilmanton, and Mondovi.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in doing quality work, and wants to make a visible impact in the communities Ntec serves. The ideal candidate will bring strong fiber construction or outside plant experience, sound judgment in the field, and a commitment to safe, reliable service.

What You’ll Do

Construct, install, and maintain underground fiber optic facilities, including conduit, handholes, pedestals, vaults, and fiber cable.
Perform fiber optic splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and restoration activities.
Read and interpret utility maps, fiber records, staking sheets, and construction drawings.
Operate plows, mini-excavators, and other construction equipment.
Install, repair, and maintain outside plant (OSP) fiber infrastructure.
Troubleshoot fiber network issues and assist with service restoration during outages.
Perform fiber acceptance testing using OTDRs, power meters, and related equipment.
Install and maintain customer drop fiber and network interface equipment as needed.
Coordinate with contractors, utility locators, and landowners on construction projects.
Maintain accurate records of splicing activities, construction updates, and facility changes.
Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency network restoration.
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards.

What We’re Looking For:

3+ years of experience in telecommunications construction, fiber optics, or outside plant operations.
Experience with underground fiber construction and maintenance.
Fiber splicing and testing experience preferred.
Knowledge of broadband and telecommunications networks.
Ability to interpret fiber network maps and construction prints.
Experience operating construction equipment and utility locating systems.
Understanding of utility safety practices and damage prevention requirements.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Education, Training, and Experience

Technical degree in telecommunications, utilities, electrical technology, or related field preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
Fiber Optic Association (FOA) certification or equivalent training is a plus.
Demonstrated experience in fiber network construction and maintenance strongly preferred.
